FOCUS Class
The goal of this class is to help build a better working relationship between the dog and handler. It will provide the handler with the tools needed to have a more controlled and focused dog.
The skills that we will focus on include:
- a reliable sit/down
- a reliable stay
- a reliable recall
- attention to handler
- knowing how to deal with distractions
- knowing how to “read” a dog
This class will be taught in a format that may be different than other classes you have previously attended. Each class will begin with foundational information related to working with dogs that have difficulty with attention and focus. We will explain the “why” of each exercise, not just the “how to”. Because future classes involve listening to an instructor, monitoring your dog’s behavior, and teaching your dog new skills, it will be necessary for each person to develop their ability to multi-task during the class. All concepts and exercises build upon each other and will need to be utilized throughout the class, in your future classes, and in day to day life. To best help you develop your handling skills, it will be necessary for the instructors to be blunt. This is not meant to criticize, but to help you quickly and effectively identify areas for improvement and provide immediate feedback to your dog.
This class is designed to provide the handler with the “tools” needed to reach the class goals, however, time will not allow a “finished product” to be built. It will be imperative that the handler uses the skills taught everyday, both in designated daily training sessions and in everyday life.
For each class session, please bring the following:
- dog mat or towel
- lawn chair (weather permitting, classes may be held outdoors)
- a variety of high value treats (hot dogs, chicken, cheese, liver, etc.)
- a hungry dog
- 6 ft leash
- flat collar (training collar if necessary)
- bug spray (weather permitting, classes may be held outdoors)
The first class will last longer than an hour and begin with some in-depth discussion. During this time, your dog will need to be crated so that you can focus on the class discussion without the added challenge of handling your dog at the same time. If your dog does not crate well, you may bring another adult to handle your dog during this portion of the class. Because many of our methods may involve a change in day to day life for you and your dog, we welcome any other adult family members so that everyone is on the same page.
